Flying home after a transplant

Air travel raises questions a local patient never has to think about. Straight answers:

Can I really fly the next day?

Yes — nearly all Hair by Air patients fly home the afternoon of day 3. The procedure uses only local anesthesia (no general sedation to recover from), there are no lifting or activity restrictions that affect sitting on a plane, and cabin pressure has no effect on the newly placed grafts.

Will people be able to tell at the airport?

At 24–48 hours you'll have tiny scabs at the graft sites. After FUT, the donor area will look unchanged. After FUE, there will be some mild redness in the donor area lasting 2–3 days. With your bandages and head covering, most people around you likely won't notice.

What about swelling?

Any swelling is usually mild, appears around days 2–4, and typically settles in the forehead area before fading on its own. We send you home with clear icing and sleeping-position instructions, plus anything else needed to keep it minimal while you travel.

Can I carry a bag or use overhead bins?

Keep it light for the first week — a small carry-on is fine, but avoid heavy lifting or straining overhead, so check a larger bag or ask for help stowing it under the seat.

What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?

Just call us — if travel trouble affects your procedure or post-op timing, we'll help you adjust and work out your hotel and scheduling. You can extend your stay at the hotel at a discounted rate.

Do I need someone to travel with me?

A companion isn't required — patients regularly do the trip solo — but you're welcome to bring someone, and they can stay with you in your covered hotel room at no extra charge.

Common questions

How much does a hair transplant at HRI cost?
Scalp hair transplants start at $5 to $6 per graft depending on FUE or FUT, with grafts above 2,500 discounted to $3 each.
How is the graft count determined?
You will receive a precise quote during your consultation over Zoom. The morning of your procedure, the surgeon will design the procedure and confirm the graft count. Grafts are counted multiple times during the procedure and clients only pay for the grafts they receive.
Is the $200 paid up front or reimbursed?
Clients share their travel expense receipt and the $200 is reimbursed back onto the client's means of payment after their procedure is completed.
Do you offer financing options?
Yes, you can get prequalified here. We offer 0% up to 24 months, and low-APR plans as far as 60 months.
How soon after my consultation can I schedule surgery?
Hair transplants are usually scheduled several months in advance, but sometimes earlier appointments are available on shorter notice.
Do I need to come back to Minnesota for follow-ups?
No, all follow-up appointments can be completed virtually. For FUT, clients will visit a provider in their local area to have their sutures removed, typically 2 weeks after the procedure.
What makes HRI worth flying to instead of using a local clinic?
Hair restoration is a one-time, permanent procedure — the difference between a natural result and an obvious one comes down to the surgeon's experience and artistry, not proximity to your house. HRI has 30+ years' experience over 10,000 procedures building undetectable hairlines one follicular unit at a time, and offers advanced options many local or general clinics don't — FUE, FUT, MaxDermal grafts, and non-surgical therapies — so your plan is matched to your hair, not to whatever a single-service clinic happens to offer. For a result you'll wear every day for the rest of your life, three days and a covered flight is a small trade for getting it done right the first time.
