Advanced Techniques Make Modern Hair Transplants Undetectable
Thinning hair is a problem that has always existed. Through the years people have come up with all manner of devices and treatments in an attempt to restore or regrow hair. Hair loss treatments have changed and adapted over the years as we learned about the causes of hair loss and as technologies were developed that delivered better, more effective treatments. One such treatment is hair transplant surgery.
When someone mentions hair transplants your mind may jump to the Barbie doll-like hair plugs of the 60s and 70s. Surgeons took large grafts of hair from one part of the scalp and transplanted it to the thinning areas to fill them in. The process left gaps between these hair “plugs”, and the results were unnatural looking, very noticeable, and resembled a doll with a bad haircut. But at that time it was the best treatment available, so many people embraced it in spite of its flaws.
Transplants started to improve in the 80s and 90s when smaller hair grafts started to be used, but it still did not produce a completely natural look. Then the early 2000s brought new technologies and techniques that revolutionized hair transplant surgery. And today surgeons are now able to perform tiny micrografts as small as 1-2 hairs per graft that produce results that are completely undetectable. The hair transplants of today look so good and so natural that many famous people have transplants, and you would never even guess.
Today’s precision tools and advanced techniques are how the magic happens that turns a bald spot into a natural-looking head of healthy growing hair. Follicles are extracted from the donor site and then sorted based on how many hairs are growing from each follicle. In this way, the surgeon can map out their placement to ensure even distribution and growth. The precision of the process also minimizes scarring at the donor sites so that they are undetectable as well. You can style it and cut it any way you wish without anyone being any the wiser unless you choose to tell them.
Because of the advancements in hair transplant surgery, you can be back to work within a week, and the scabs should be gone in about 7-12 days. The procedure is relatively painless. The only discomfort you should feel is from the initial injections to numb your scalp for the surgery. Pain relievers can be used for the next couple of days until our scalp is feeling back to normal. There will be some initial swelling, so it’s best to schedule the procedure so that you won’t have to go into the office right away.
You don’t have to worry about losing the transplanted hair. The follicles taken from the donor sites are genetically different from those that were naturally on top of your head. The transplanted follicles are not susceptible to the same thinning and loss as the existing follicles there were. You do need to be proactive about the health of the rest of your hair to ensure that it stays thick and strong for years to come.
