Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy For Hair Loss

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an effective non-surgical hair restoration solution for men and women suffering from hereditary hair loss. PRP uses the body's natural healing properties to thicken hair follicles, reverse hair loss, and produce a fuller head of hair. PRP treatments can be done as a adjunct treatment accompanying hair transplant surgery or as a stand-alone treatment option.

Human blood naturally contains stem cells and natural growth factors that assist in healing and natural tissue regeneration. The PRP Hair Restoration therapy procedure utilizes special cells known as platelets that induces growth in hair follicles by stimulating stem cells within the natural structure of the hair follicle itself. These patients’ blood platelets promote healing and regeneration, and the body’s natural formation of new cell response and growth.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is safe to be used along with hair restoration surgery, either prior to or post-surgery. Patients seeking a non-surgical solution alternative to hair transplants may also look to PRP as a non-surgical and minimally-invasive option to restore their hair. PRP is also an effective option for reversing hair loss among individuals who do not wish to take medication. PRP Treatments are often done in series spaced 1-3 months apart.

What are the benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy for Hair?

Natural Treatment: Since PRP uses the patient’s own blood, and not any synthetic medication or chemicals, the risk of allergic reactions, side effect or infections is minimized. Patients who do not wish to take anti-hair loss medication such as minoxidil or finasteride can do PRP treatments instead.

Non-Surgical: PRP therapy is minimally invasive compared to surgical hair restoration techniques and can be completed in a few minutes, instead of a full day of surgery

Double Effect: Studies have shown that PRP can be effective in both promoting hair growth and improving hair density. The resulting hair growth is the patient's natural growing hair.

Helps Other Therapies: PRP can improve the supply of donor hair available to a patient for later hair transplantation, both through new growth and by reducing the size of thinning areas.

No Downtime: PRP treatments are non-surgical and do not require any down-time for healing. Patients often go back to work or their usual activities right away.

Wide application: PRP is an excellent treatment for a wide array of hair loss conditions, including those that would be contraindicated for hair transplants. PRP is often the preferred initial treatment for hair thinning, as opposed to balding.

What to expect in a PRP Treatment

At the Hair Restoration Institute of Minnesota, patient safety and comfort are our top two priorities, which is why we only use the most advanced FDA-cleared technologies in our treatments

1. Draw Blood:
Patients will relax in a reclining chair while a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient’s arm, similar to a routine blood test.

2. Spin Centrifugation:
The drawn blood is placed in a centrifuge, a machine that spins the blood at high speeds to separate its components: red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma. A special filter within the test tube further concentrates the plasma into "platelet rich plasma".

3. PRP Preparation:
The separated plasma, now rich in platelets, is collected into syringes for administration. Platelets are a type of blood cell that contain growth factors and proteins essential for healing and tissue regeneration.

4. Scalp Injection:
The PRP is injected into the scalp, particularly in areas experiencing hair thinning or hair loss. The injections are typically done using a fine needle to minimize discomfort. Numbing cream is available at no extra charge.

5. Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) Treatment
To finish the treatment, patients at the Hair Restoration Institute are given a complimentary LLLT treatment using one of our prescription-grade MEP-90 devices. The treatments are heatless and painless and work to increase the effectiveness of the PRP by stimulating the follicles at the cellular level

Growth Factors at Work:
Once injected, the growth factors and proteins in the PRP help stimulate hair follicles, promoting hair growth and increasing the thickness of existing hair. The growth factors can improve blood supply to the hair follicles, strengthen hair shafts, and increase the thickness of the hair.

What should I do before and after my PRP Appointment?

Starting 1 week before your appointment: Please discontinue blood thinning agents such as vitamin E, fish oil, all herbal supplements, and multivitamins. Please discontinue any anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and Voltaren. We want inflammation to occur – as this is one mechanism by which PRP works. You may use Tylenol (acetaminophen) as needed prior to the treatment.

Starting 1 day before your appointment: Please increase your water and protein intake. Please do not drink alcohol and take precautions to prevent sunburns in the scalp area, such as by wearing sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats when outside. You'll also want to stop tobacco use, which can constrict blood flow in your scalp.

On the day of your appointment: Please arrive well hydrated with freshly shampooed hair. Do not apply sprays, gels, or styling products to your hair. You may eat breakfast and lunch normally. The PRP needle is small but it may cause discomfort. If you have a higher sensitivity, you can take extra-strength Tylenol (acetaminophen) 1 hour before arrival. We also recommend purchasing Lidocaine Cream (available on Amazon here) and applying it to your scalp 1 hour before your appointment.

After your appointment: Please do not exercise, use a sauna, or use a swimming pool for 12 hours. Avoid smoking and alcohol for 24 hours. Avoid hair dye and topical Minoxidil (Rogaine) for three days.

Let your provider know if you take blood thinners (such as Warfarin, Coumadin, or Plavix); if you take broad beta-blockers such as Inderal (Propranolol); or if you have a compromised immune system.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) FAQ

Non-surgical regenerative therapy for hair loss refers to treatments that use the body’s natural healing processes to stimulate hair growth and prevent further hair thinning. These therapies involve techniques like using your body's own growth factors or low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to encourage hair follicles to enter the growth phase, which can result in thicker, healthier hair over time.

This therapy works by activating dormant or weakened hair follicles, encouraging them to produce hair. Growth factors from your own body, when concentrated and applied to the scalp, can accelerate the repair and renewal of tissues, leading to the rejuvenation of hair follicles. Meanwhile, low-level laser therapy uses light energy to stimulate cellular activity in the hair follicles, boosting hair growth.

Yes, non-surgical regenerative therapies have been shown to be effective for many individuals experiencing hair thinning or hair loss. These treatments can help increase hair density, reduce hair shedding, and improve the overall health of your scalp and hair. However, the effectiveness can vary depending on the cause of hair loss, the severity, and individual response to treatment.

A meta-analysis of patients who received treatment versus patients in a control group

saw the following improvements in the treatment group’s hair. Specifically, they reported

thicker hair shafts, more hairs per square centimeters, and a higher ratio of thick vs thin

hairs.

Hair density nm²: 220 (95% CI 70–380, P = 0.005)

Hairs / cm²: 38.75 (95% CI 22.22–55.28, P < .00001)

Terminal hairs/cm²: 22.83 (95% CI 0.28–45.38, P = 0.05)

Good candidates for these treatments are individuals in the early to moderate stages of hair thinning or hair loss. If your hair follicles are still active but have become weakened, non-surgical regenerative therapy can be particularly beneficial. It is important to have a consultation with a specialist who can assess your condition and determine if this therapy is suitable for you.

During a session, a healthcare professional will prepare the area of your scalp that is experiencing hair thinning. Depending on the specific therapy, they may apply growth factors derived from your body directly to the scalp or use a device to deliver low-level laser energy. The procedure is generally quick, minimally invasive, and involves little to no downtime. You may experience some mild discomfort, but most patients find it very tolerable.

The number of sessions required varies depending on the severity of your hair loss and the specific treatment protocol. Most patients start seeing noticeable improvements after 3 to 6 sessions, typically spaced a few weeks apart. Your healthcare provider will create a personalized treatment plan to ensure the best possible outcome.

Non-surgical regenerative hair treatments are generally considered safe with minimal side effects. Some individuals may experience mild redness, swelling, or irritation at the treatment site, but these effects are typically short-lived. It’s important to follow post-treatment care instructions provided by your healthcare provider to minimize any risks.

The longevity of results can vary from person to person. For many, the benefits of the treatment can last a year or more, and longer when the treatment is combined with medication. Maintenance sessions may be recommended to sustain the results and promote continued hair growth. Your healthcare provider will advise you on the best course of action based on your individual response to the therapy.

Yes, non-surgical regenerative therapy can often be combined with other hair loss treatments for enhanced results. For example, it can complement topical treatments or oral medications that promote hair growth. Always consult with a healthcare provider before combining therapies to ensure they are safe and effective for your specific condition.

One of the advantages of non-surgical regenerative therapy for hair loss is the minimal downtime. Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately after a session. However, it's advisable to avoid strenuous activities and direct sun exposure to the treated area for a short period following the treatment to ensure optimal healing.

Patients should seek out experienced medical providers for their treatments, specifically Medical Doctors or Nurse Practitioners licensed by their state’s medical board and who specialize in hair restoration. “Medspas” typically do not have licensed or experienced providers, are unable to prescribe medication, and do not have the oversight required to perform adequate treatments. Plastic surgery clinics treat a wide range of aesthetic concerns, and do not have the expertise that comes from specializing in hair. Instead, seek out clinics like the Hair Restoration Institute of Minnesota, who are exclusively dedicated to hair.
